my bloggy friends urged me to go for the jewellry/clothing/spa day, etc. and then i realized (kind of sheepishly) that i had actually already ordered myself a rather posh necklace from lia sophia at a jewellry party a week or two ago in the name of "it's my birthday soon." because, of course, i purchase nothing for myself unless it's a special occasion (HA!). (and let me tell you, lia sophia is the mother-lovin' devil)
so anyway, i walked into the store and was dealt with by the rather brusque "pam," who herself modelled a pink sweatshirt with hand-appliqued gingham hearts (delightful). she informed me that if i was looking for a machine that could stitch through 7 layers of fabric (uh, no) then i needed one of these here "vikings."
"i got three of 'em at home," pam croaked.
mine, for 10 monthly installments of $143.00 PER MONTH. (sweet jesus. do people really go into debt for these things???)
"uhm, i really only want to stitch some pillows, and maybe curtains...and stuff.."
"do you quilt??"
"not really" (as in, not-fucking-at-all, and nor will i ever. will i????)
with some eye-rolling on pam's part, i was veered to a much more appropriate model for someone of my
so, yes, i got me a machine. and i should thank my SnB cohort, ann, for handholding me enough through the process so i did not make a massive gaff. poor wench. she thinks she only gave me purchasing advice, but little does she know she needs to show me how to faggot now.
(and yes, i am indeed overly enamored with the term "faggot" still not having the foggiest over what it means).
will i become one of those crafty bloggers who posts pictures of her stitched creations for all the world to see? you bet your frigging ass i will...
i declare, that i am about to start to sew nostalgia. (shuddup...)

I like me some Soulemama, Mossy Cottage is the home of the Dulaan knitting project and Daphne is another rockin' crafty lady I like.
There. Now don't say I never give you anything.
This book is pretty cool; it comes with three patterns for simple projects. Have I made any of them, you might ask, even though, as Amazon just informed me when I went to grab the link, "Michelle, You Purchased This Item on June 25, 2005!" Erm, no, but it seems like a really good idea, and the patterns look cool and un-dowdy.
Also, I have wildly ambitious plans to customize a bunch of t-shirts for summer using this idea this idea as a template.
angry chicken and little birds are my fave sewing/general craft blogs, but there're zillions of good ones out there.
i am checking out all this STUFF. and my afternoon is slowly but surely slipping away from me. thanks!
...as long as you also wound up with something pretty for your birthday...i guess it's okay!
i'm impressed... i actually have a machine, myself... tho' i have no idea how to use it, and no inclination to learn. (why do i have it then? i...er...uh...don't remember...)!
can't give ya any good "crafty" links, either. so, basically, i'm useless. (just wait 'til ya need some good jewelry/shoes/clothing sites, tho', cuz those things i know!) : )
I got a very basic sewing machine for my birthday and have no idea what to do with it. Hem my kids' pants I guess.
I cracked up at your anecdote about Country Stitches. My Mom practically lived there, she actually owned one of those outrageously expensive Viking Sergers. She made some pretty cool stuff with it. I took a quilting class there once to learn how to make a baby quilt. It said "beginners welcome" but everyone else had made quilts before except me. Never did finish the darn thing.
I bow to your crafty altar. My one attempt to knit ended with a big pile of knotted yarn which I flung forcefully at the wall, vowing never to pick it up again. So far I have made good on my promise.
"the rather brusque "pam," who herself modelled a pink sweatshirt with hand-appliqued gingham hearts (delightful)"
THAT cracked me up. I'm a little scared of a sewing maching called a "Viking." I'm a little scared of sewing machines in general, but my secret craft fetishes abound (glue guns, decoupage, all on the horizon).
And, yes, I predict: YOU WILL quilt.
Joy's suddenly going to sport all manner of chic handbags and to-die-for skirts. And, yes, I'll teach you how to faggot (fajoht is how it's pronounced). Connects two pieces of fabric together with just threads in between them. Perfect on the bottom of a summer cami ;) craftster.org is one of my fave sites.
